Car ferries are such a great way to travel. When you rid on car ferries, you can get on board on foot, bicycle, motorcycle and car, truck or sometimes, bus. Car ferries are a mainstream part of people’s everyday commute in some areas. And car ferries are also sometimes a special attraction that are mainly used by vacationers and tourists. But either way, car ferries are a great way to get from one place to another, crossing the water…on the water.

Car ferries come in varying sizes. And car ferries are in existence in many different states of old and quaint to very modern and sophisticated. When you travel to some countries outside the United States, you may find yourself waiting on line for a very old, rickety looking car ferry that is small and moves slowly and you wonder if you will survive not only the endless wait for the car ferry, but the journey when you are actually riding on the car ferry.

One such car ferry is found in Costa Rica and up until a couple of years ago…in order to avoid driving the long way around up north when traveling from San Jose to the Nicoya Peninsula, you used to have to take a car ferry. Now with the construction of the Tempisque bridge, you can drive easily just north of where the ferry landing is located go across without the use of the car ferry.

In Washington State, there is an extensive public system of car ferries. This fleet of ferry boats runs on a frequent and regular schedule and is a pleasure to use. Thousands of Washington citizens utilize the many car ferries every day to go to and from work and often they ride the car ferries without their cars. Part of the beauty is that you can use the car ferries as passenger ferries as well. The only drawback to having to use the car ferries to commute to work and get home again is that during the height of tourist season, the use of the ferries system in markedly increased so lines are longer and may impede a commuter’s getting to work on time.

Riding on the car ferries in Washington is such a pleasure that it isn’t uncommon for a couple or a family to take a day trip from downtown Seattle on one of the car ferries, to Bainbridge Island or Bremerton or Whidby Island and on to Port Townsend for the day and back home again that same evening. If you wanted to leave your car behind, you can still go to Bainbridge Island or Bremerton and just walk around, sight see and have a meal and return again, all on foot. In fact, on the fourth of July, the car ferries leaving the Seattle piers, if timed just right, are the perfect way to witness some great fireworks displays. So car ferries are both fun and very utilitarian.
