Car maintenance cost will vary wildly depending on the type of car you drive. For example a Ford F250 is going to cost considerably more to run and maintain than a simple little Toyota Corolla (for the most part anyway).

Bigger cars obviously use more fuel, that’s a given. However that is something that owners are, or should be, aware of well before deciding on a large car or SUV purchase.

Apart from fuel costs, is there really a huge difference in car maintenance costs across different types and models of cars?

Well, some car manufacturers simply charge more for replacement parts. That’s where a lot of the car maintenance cost comes in. Fortunately there are many third party parts providers, however this will not apply to all cars. And often it’s much better to buy from the manufacturer as they know exactly how each part fits to the car.

European cars are renowned for being well made, but also quite expensive to maintain. Car maintenance costs for European cars such as BMW, Audi, Mercedes and exotic models will far exceed the cost of parts and dealer service charges for models such as a Toyota, Ford or Nissan.

This is simply due to the European models being known as luxury cars and therefore commanding not only a higher upfront price, but also a higher parts price. You should keep this in mind when purchasing a European car.

With all that said car maintenance costs can be minimized simply by adhering to basic maintenance principles and schedules. If you look after your car, your car will look after you by not playing up too often. It will also last longer, use less fuel and generally cost you less in the long run. All you need to do is perform regular oil changes, coolant flushes, fluid changes, spark plug checks and other basic tasks.
