There are many reasons that you might need to get involved in car rentals. Sometimes you need a car rental because you are on vacation and as you move from place to place while on vacation, you need a vehicle so you can go see the sights so car rentals become a viable option. Sometimes you are in need of a car rental because your primary car is out of commission for some reason. People who’s cars have been damaged in a wreck often have to use car rental services until their own car is repaired and can get back on the road. And sometimes when a person car is being serviced at the mechanic’s or the dealership, they use car rentals to get around. Car rentals can be quite helpful when necessary, but there are some potential pitfalls to car rentals.
Car rentals can be quite costly. You can find some weekend specials here and there, but by and large car rentals are a pretty high priced way to get around. If you are on vacation, you might want to weigh the cost of car rentals against the cost of taking a cab to places you want to go. With car rentals, the car is always there for you to use so the cost of the car rental might be outweighed by the freedom and convenience, but if you will only be driving to one or two places from your hotel, maybe car rentals are not for you as you do not need a car available to you at all times.
Of course, taking taxis can be pretty expensive too so you do need to get an accurate picture of the taxi rates in the area where you are visiting before deciding that they are better than car rentals. The daily cost of car rentals isn’t the only cost involved. When you get involved with car rentals, you will also need to buy fuel. Most car rentals come with a full tank of gas, but you have to be sure to return the car with a full tank of gas or you will be charged an exorbitant per gallon fee for the car rental agency to fill up the car from their pumps.
There is also the matter of car insurance when dealing with car rentals. Often the per day fee for complete car rental insurance coverage with no deductibles is as much as the basic daily fee for the car. This seems like such a rip off, but if you don’t buy it, you will be worrying about the car all the time you are supposed to be enjoying your vacation and then you know that the car rental agency will go over the car with a fine tooth comb when you return it and you are going to get dinged for some multi-hundred deductible fee anyway so you might as well pay for the peace of mind right up front from the car rental agency.
