Is It Possible
There are many areas within our lives where we find that we could “trim the fat”, when it comes to our spending habits. Our budget for gasoline is one area. However, we live in a society where we are dependent upon our vehicles and therefore gas. When the rates for gas soar, we are rendered helpless. We find ourselves forgoing that evening out so that we will have enough gas money throughout the week. Don’t despair; there are a few ways in which you can control your amount of time and money at the pump.
First, if at all possible, try to avoid filling up your tank when gas prices are sky high. Wait for the price to decline somewhat before you fill up. Filling up your tank when the price is peaking lets gas companies know that you are willing to pay ridiculous prices for gas. For example, in my home town there is a gas station on a busy corner that charges 30cents more than a gas station three blocks away. It is worth traveling the three extra blocks, in my opinion, for the cheaper gas.
Next, you do not need to purchase the highest priced gasoline. Most cars are built to run on regular unleaded. It is important to check your vehicle’s manual and/or your mechanic. Many have said that the high, more expensive gas is a waste of money.
When driving, try to accelerate slowly when leaving the stop light. The fastest person out of the intersection, only ends up spending more on gas. Also, do not reeve your engine needlessly. Revving your engine merely wastes gas.
Walk, bike, or run to your intended destination, whenever possible. If you must drive, then try to arrange a car pool with other people. If you do not know of a car pool near you; call your local community traffic department and ask if they offer a share-ride program. This is an excellent way to save on gasoline.
Finally, the greatest step towards saving money on gasoline is to purchase vehicles that are fuel-efficient.
